Abstract. A classical Theorem of Lyusternik-Fet asserts that any closed Riemannian manifold contains a non constant closed geodesic. In a joint work with Antonio Lerario (Florida Atlantic University) we have recently investigated the corresponding questions in sub-riemannian geometry. The goal of the talk is to first introduce the basics of sub-riemannian geometry and then discuss the main steps in the proof of the existence of a closed geodesic in a compact contact manifold. The talk will be made accessible for people interested in topology, differential geometry and analysis.
