Constant mean curvature surfaces in the Minkowski space and affine spheres

Abstract. We will give an introduction to the differential geometry of surfaces in a 3-dimensional vector space, especially constant mean curvature surfaces with respect to a Minkowski metric and affine spheres. These two types of surfaces turn out to be governed by similar PDEs and are related by Higgs bundles. We then discuss the problem of finding those surfaces asymptotic to a polygonal cone.
