Generalized solution concepts to the Ericksen-Leslie equations modeling liquid crystal flow

Abstract. The Ericksen-Leslie equations are a system of nonlinear partial differential equations describing the flow of liquid crystals. This system is equipped with the non-convex Oseen-Frank energy leading to a nonlinear differential operator of second order that is non-monotone. Different partial answers to the question of well-posedness are presented in the form of different solvability concepts. The plethora of different solution concepts ranges from strong over weak and measure-valued solutions to dissipative solutions. A relative energy inequality holds for this system, which allows to deduce the weak-strong uniqueness property and investigate the long-time behavior.
